FORT WORTH, TX – July 1, 2024 – Civil Rights Attorney Daryl K. Washington and the family of Anthony Johnson, Jr. will hold a press conference on Tuesday, July 2, 2024. They will provide a response to the indictments of Rafael Moreno, who placed his knee on the back of 31-year-old Marine Veteran Anthony Johnson, Jr. for approximately 90 seconds after he was retained, and Lt. Joel Garcia, who failed to intervene to prevent Johnson’s death. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Johnson’s cause of death to be asphyxia (mechanical and chemical), resulting in a homicide. Johnson was in custody at the Tarrant County Jail when an altercation involving several jailers, including Moreno and Garcia, took place on April 21, 2024, causing Johnson’s tragic death.
